AI Will Replace 80% of Designers… Or Will It?
Here’s a headline that always sparks debate: AI will replace designers. Some claim that tools like ChatGPT, MidJourney, and Figma AI will make human designers obsolete. I have a different perspective: AI will replace bad designers, not good ones.
I’ve seen AI generate thousands of layouts in minutes. It can suggest colors, create icons, even write microcopy. The efficiency is undeniable. But here’s the catch: AI lacks intuition, empathy, and a deep understanding of subtle human behaviors. You can’t ask it why a design feels off or how it evokes emotion. That’s where humans still hold the edge.
At UIXEL, AI isn’t a replacement — it’s a turbo boost. It allows me to explore ideas faster, test variations, and even predict trends, but it doesn’t make the final decisions. The creative vision, the storytelling, and the ethical choices remain human. Without those, even the most polished AI-generated interface feels soulless.
I’ve noticed a dangerous trend: companies panic when they hear “AI can design.” They think they can simply replace designers with algorithms to cut costs. The reality is starkly different. A project managed entirely by AI might produce something functional, but it won’t resonate emotionally, and it certainly won’t create a memorable experience.
Here’s the controversial part: I actually welcome AI. I love how it challenges traditional design workflows. It forces designers to think more strategically, to focus on what truly matters — human experience. Good designers will evolve, using AI as a partner, while those unwilling to adapt will fade away.
The truth is, AI is reshaping the industry, but it’s not a threat. It’s a filter. It separates those who understand design from those who just execute it. And honestly? That’s exciting. It means the future of design will be smarter, faster, and more human-centered than ever before.
